27 BETTER RESOLUTIONS THAN GOING TO THE GYM

I always do a nice resolve to "love yourself this year" post around New Years. Click here to read my post from 2013, click here to read my post from 2014, and click here to read my post from 2015. I just feel like giving yourself a resolution is a reason to push your real problems deeper down. Health may be a deeper problem, and, in that case, seek a dietician or personal trainer. I think going to the gym is great, and is something we shouldn't have to resolve our selves to do. You can give yourself a resolution to be happier, but have the reason behind that be because you love yourself and your body, and want to be healthier to live a long and happier life. But giving ourself numbers on a scale as a label, we are perpetuating a nasty cycle that begins with body shaming and ends in eating disorders. Here are 27 better resolutions than going to the gym this year:


  1. Taking yourself on weekly coffee dates.
  2. Do a good deed.
  3. Take up the hobby you've always been meaning to.
  4. Read that book you've always been meaning to.
  5. Learn that skill or computer program you've always wanted to.
  6. Have a night with your friends in a place you've never gone to.
  7. Strengthen a friendship or relationship that you feel needs more attention.
  8. If you've been meaning to mend a broken friendship or relationship, do it.
  9. Think of something you love about yourself every day.
  10. Go on day trips with your close friends, family, or significant other.
  11. If your heart is broken, take time to mend it.
  12. If your heart is empty, find someone to fill it.
  13. Take a vow to sleep in more, or go to bed earlier. 
  14. Start power napping.
  15. Take a look at your finances, and see if you have an opportunity to save more. 
  16. Hit up local flea markets or farmer's market.
  17. Practice mindful meditation.
  18. Vow to speak up for yourself more often.
  19. Be more honest with yourself.
  20. Be more honest with others.
  21. Fix up your resume or portfolio.
  22. If you need professional help in any way but are avoiding it, look into it.
  23. Count your blessings and be happy to be alive every day.
  24. Tell the people that you love in your life that you love them. 
  25. If you don't have a pet, but want one, rescue one.
  26. Redecorate a room in your living space.
  27. Do self-improvement things because you love yourself and want to learn how to love yourself even more.

CHRISTMAS OOTD AND FOTD

Merry Christmas! It's time for the annual Christmas look of Dollar Store Diva. I feel like every year, my Christmas look changes with my style. If you've been following my blog, you've seen my style change throughout the years. However, most people go through style changes. This year everything is darker, slimmer, and smokier.


My OOTD:


Tank: White House Black Market

Joggers: Kohls

I could get away with a tank top because it's unseasonably warm. I'd like to thank the Heat Miser and my lack of self-restraint.  I got this tank from work (WHBM) after the first shift I worked this break, and loved its simple elegance.

My FOTD:

Lips: MAC
Eyeliner: CoverGirl
Highlighter: Benefit "It Girl"
Blush: NYC Cinnamon 

I got the Influenster VoxBox, for free, with the CoverGirl #Plumpify Mascara.
The #plumpify mascara has a bilayer wand for extra plumpness of my eyelashes. Here's a before and after picture:


You can also see a closeup of my winged eyeliner, highlighter at the corner of my eyes, and revlon eyebrow filler. I love the shape and definition this gives my eyelashes.

HEALTHY CHRISTMAS EVE BUTTERNUT SQUASH PASTA

One of my favorite things to do is to make recipes "Nikki-fied", which usually means, add a healthier kick to it. I do this all the time. It may be me being stubborn and a perfectionist, it may be me being a health nut, it may be me wanting a reason to make a new blog post, the world may ever know. However, I do know that I love butternut squash and pasta.


On Christmas Eve, my family likes to make Italian-style food. Perhaps it's because the food we eat on Christmas day is so Americanized. Perhaps it's because pasta food is such a comfort food for a cold December night. Either way, it's a tradition I don't mind. I found this recipe on Pinterest, and it instantly stuck out to me. Pasta, gorgonzola, bacon, butternut squash, pasta... it's all heavenly to me.

The first step was to make the sauce. The sauce is a rich butternut squash sauce. The first step is to roast the butternut squash with garlic.



When it was almost done, I started sizzling the pasta toppings in a sautee pan. I replaced bacon with turkey bacon, and added sun dried tomatoes.


After the squash and garlic were tender, I took it out. I don't love too much garlic, so I minced it after roasting. Then, I added both to a food processor. 


In a bowl, I whisked light cream instead of heavy cream, nonfat greek yogurt, diced tomatoes, 3/4 cup gorgonzola cheese, and low sodium chicken stock.

 

I got the squash processing away while adding my dairy mixture in through the tube.


Then, according to the recipe, I cooked the pasta according to bag instructions. My replacement here was organic linguine for regular linguine. The instructions called the save some pasta water to loosen up the sauce. However, since I used nonfat greek yogurt and my diced tomatoes were more watery, I didn't need to. 
I combined the pasta, sauce, and topping, and boom!



Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup sun dried tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken stock
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 cup nonfat greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup light cream
  • 1 1/4 cup gorgonzola cheese
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 medium-sized butternut squash, cut into chunks
  • 16 oz of linguine
  • 6 strips of turkey bacon
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil 
Directions:
1. Roast the cubed butternut squash and garlic in an oven set to 375 for 40 minutes
2. Sautee 6 cut turkey bacon slices and 1/4 cup cut sun dried tomatoes in a sautee pan on medium 
3. Whisk light cream instead of heavy cream, nonfat greek yogurt, diced tomatoes, 3/4 cup gorgonzola cheese, and low sodium chicken stock in a bowl to make a thick liquid mixture.
4. When squash and garlic are done, put it in a food processor or hard blender.
5. While squash and garlic are processing, add in the liquid mixture through the tube.
6. Cook 16 oz organix linguini according to package instructions.
7. Mix together and garnish with more gorgonzola cheese.
8. Enjoy!

** note that sauce ingredients will make enough sauce for 3 pounds of pasta. Make it all and freeze for leftovers, or lower amounts**

OOTD: A PECULIARLY WARM DECEMBER DAY

You know those days when you just love your outfit so much you want everyone to appreciate it? That was my day on Friday, December 11. How else would I increase my amount of outfit appreciators? Make an #OOTD blog post about it, duh!

Usually in the north shore of Massachusetts, December 12 means I'm bundling up in my chunky sweaters, North Face jacket, fuzzy socks, and my bean boots. However, I'm getting away with this chunky Forever 21 seater and light tank top. Temperatures have been between 50 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit around here.

Lately, my style has been two words:  masculine and dark. I loved playing with the two textures of this tank top and cardigan. I also love seeing how the pants and booties work together.

Pumpkin Spice Cookies

Two-ingredient cookies are a blessing. Last Christmas, I made Key Lime Cool Whip cookies. They were MAGICAL. Honestly, when I make these two ingredient cookies, it's all about the batter and not about the cookies. What I like about these cookies is that they taste like little cakes. That means that they're very moist and will pair will with ice cream. Some people do these cookies filled with chocolate chips, some pair it with a cream cheese frosting.


These cookies are incredibly easy to make.
Ingredients:
  • 1 box spice cake mix
  • 1 can pumpkin puree
Directions:
1. Mix ingredients in a bowl
2. Grease a cookie sheet and preheat the oven to 350 degrees
3. Bake for 18 minutes and let cool for 5 minutes



Pumpkin and spice cake mix makes pumpkin spice... it's the cookie of the "typical white girl!" Happy holidays!

Finals Inspiration As Told by DJ Khaled

Recently, DJ Kahled has stolen many hearts and inspired many people's days over snapchat. He's formerly known for his rap songs with phrases like  "we the best" and "another one" thrown in, however now he's known for recording ten-second snapchat  videos of inspiration while wearing slippers that are embroidered with "another one".
Who else to turn to for finals inspiration besides him? Here are some tips right from his videos.

1. They don't WANT you to succeed... but you GOTTA!

DJ Khaled know that not everyone out there is your friend. Not everyone wants you to succeed. Prove them wrong this finals season.

2. Relaxation is key

He may have a lot of bills but you have a lot of schoolwork. You may not be able to afford a massage three times a week, but take mini study break and no something that makes you happy. Take a walk, grab a frappuccino from Starbucks, watch an episode from your favorite TV show.

3. Wake up, rise up, bless up.

4. Keep your head on straight.

Finals can be stressful but keep it healthy so it will work on test day. Keep your head above the (jacuzzi) water.

5. Sleep when possible

Sleep can be minimal during finals week, however make sure you still get it. At least some.. please.

6. Remember the bigger picture.

At the end of the day, will you remember the ins and out of the social welfare system or that you stayed up until 4 a.m. cramming the night before the final? Will you remember how to create a business plan or will you remember how horrible your group project members where? Take a step back and remember the latter.

7. Always remember: you're smart..
